During the five years Deann and I crisscrossed Mexico researching our first book, we allowed our attention to stray from regional cooking to the vast diversity of Mexico’s regional folk art traditions. Shortly after opening Frontera, we began collecting Mexican fine art, too, so that our guests could get a glimpse of that vital and sophisticated side of our next-door neighbor’s esthetic sensibilities. The work of Oaxacan artists captured my heart and their work quickly became the focus of our collection. The magical realism of “Bicycles and Constellations” by Enrique Flores was one of our first major purchases and it remains the piece people ask most about today. R.B.
