There was a time (not that long ago) that my parents wouldn't dare go near NYC. In fact they'd take huge detours just to avoid driving near it! Sometimes statistics aren't really helpful especially when it comes to tourist destinations.
I suppose the silver lining is that it keeps the timid away from the really great spots.
